This Revitalised Motel With Old Hollywood Vibes Is Byron Bay's Newest Design Destination

    by admin January 18, 2021
    by admin January 18, 2021

The Sunseeker on Bundjalung country (Northern Coastal NSW) is exactly as its name suggests: a haven for those chasing sunshine, sand and surf. Basically… all those Byron vibes!

New owners Jess and Dave Frid recruited an all-star creative dream team to give the tired ‘80s motel a serious spritz, and fill the retro interiors with the best of the best local makers. Replete with jagged flagstone floors and pieces from every notable creative in the Northern Rivers, this design-led new accommodation is a reflection of its truly iconic location.

Despite some ongoing restrictions on inter-state travel, The Sunseeker just officially opened for business… so if you’ve been building up a wishlist of dream travel destinations, we recommend bumping this to the top of the list!

The Colourful, Creative World of Interior Designer, Danielle Brustman

    by admin January 17, 2021
    by admin January 17, 2021

The best creatives are the ones that come along and shake things up when you didn’t think any refreshing was required. The TDF team experienced that sensation last year when we saw pictures of a groundbreaking early learning centre in Richmond, freshly completed by local interior design extraordinaire, Danielle Brustman. It was clear she knew how to make a mark.

Since that short time ago, this under-the-radar former theatre set designer has been rapidly racking up some serious street cred – launching an installation for the NGV Triennial 2020, receiving a commendation for her ‘Chromatic Fantastic’ cabinet at the 2020 TDF + Laminex Design Awards, and setting up shop in the thriving new Collingwood Yards arts precinct, as the recipient of the Bank of Melbourne Studio Residency. Phew! That’s a big list.

But for someone at the top of her game, Danielle keeps a pretty low profile. Now’s your chance to get to know her!

Kangaroo Leather Pieces Inspired By The Australian Landscape

    by admin January 11, 2021
    by admin January 11, 2021

Liam Dillon is one maker in one studio crafting all his designs from one material: vegetable tanned kangaroo leather. It sounds niche, but this is the most sustainable leather on the Australian market, made even more environmentally friendly by Liam’s solo artisanal practice, which shuns modern manufacturing processes in favour of traditional leather-working techniques.

The leather craftsman has built his brand, Liam Dillon Designs, around this single substance, crafting unisex accessories like envelope folded backpacks, zipped money pouches and pocket-sized wallets by hand. We visited him at his Brunswick studio (inside the Parigina Footwear shoe factory where he trained!) to learn more about his specialist trade.

Practicality was the key driver behind this Sydney garden makeover, but the vision of property owner and landscape designer Julian Bombardiere, owner of Ballast Landscape, has resulted in a lush and inspiring, yet still functional, space.

A Moody Slice Of Paradise In The Byron Hinterland

    by admin January 10, 2021
    by admin January 10, 2021

In case us city dwellers had any shadow of a doubt that we might have ended up with the wrong lifestyle, here we come with another exquisite home in the New South Wales Northern Rivers area. Sorry not sorry!

The Dairy is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Byron Bay in the hinterland, perched high on a hill with panoramic views of its lush, picturesque surrounds. Recently restored by Julie Weis and her daughter Lucy Haidamous alongside a team of highly skilled builders, tradespeople and artisans, The Dairy is the kind of place that might just convince you to pack it all in and move to the country. Or, at the very least, you can go stay there (well… when the borders open, Victorians!).
