Pippin Drysdale has been working as a ceramic artist for over 40 years, all of which she has spent fascinated with colour. Her bold, vivid porcelain vessels vary from plump, misshapen orbs to thin, wide-brimmed vases, emblazoned with a spectrum of hues found in the Australian landscape.
The onset of the pandemic marks the first time Pippin has been in one place for more than three months, allowing her time and space to shift her focus from the vast, sweeping desert plains of remote country, to the smallness and minutiae of the natural world.
We visited Pippin’s home studio in Fremantle to learn more about her unique practice. This is where the magic happens!

The last 18 months have seen a new sub category of small businesses emerge in the design space. These are the businesses of people who lost their jobs, or whose workloads drastically decreased following the onset of the pandemic, and those who needed a creative outlet to keep their hands and brains busy during the many long months of Melbourne’s lockdowns.
Aided by the chronic online-ness of the general population during this time, new businesses (particularly those with aesthetically pleasing outcomes) have quickly grown massive followings on Instagram. This, combined with the urge many of us felt to update our home spaces, provided fertile ground for P0LY Designs founders Lara Fisher and Andy Kepitis to launch a pivot-project that has quickly grown into fully fledged business – all from the backyard of their Northcote sharehouse.
After 18 months of creating their tiled plinths, consoles and side tables from home, Lara and Andy have recently moved their fast-growing business to a beautiful new work space and studio in Fitzroy North. We caught up with the business partners (and couple of 10 years!) to learn more about the future of their ‘accidental baby’!

Building A Family Legacy On Local Manufacturing, With Abode Living
by adminby adminFamily businesses are few and far between in this day and age, so when we come across a good one – we shout it from the rooftops!
Abode Living was founded in 1991 by Robert Adair (whose family opened the famous haberdashery store by the same name on Chapel Street in the early 1900s!). Robert opened the first Abode store in Camberwell in 2000, which now contains the company’s production facilities and offices all in one building. Nearly everything is designed and developed here in Melbourne!
Robert’s son Ben and daughter-in-law Amelia joined the bedding and textile business in 2005 and have been there ever since, as have many of their staff. With local manufacturing and small business close to their hearts, this is a true legacy story!
